“Can it be I stayed away too long”? I’ve been getting some hits from people who are a little salty about my absence. Well it’s been 6 months to the day since I last posted, so I think now’s a good time to get back in. A lot has gone down. I’ll spare you some of the details, but the result is LOVE.

You can expect some changes to this thing, but I’m still coming with my brand of truth-saying. –I hope this finds you well.

–In case you’re wondering, enlakesh comes from the Mayans. It means “you are another me” or vice versa. We are one.

"What happened."

House Shoes
I missed out on a lot of hot joints last September. But I did make the one that was most important to me, House in the Park! OH GOD. Seriously, that was the best birthday weekend… ever! Hosted by DJ Ramon Rawsoul, DJs Kai Alce, Salah Ananse, and the incomparable Kemit so thoroughly rock the spot, cats is still feelin’ aftershocks. I had to retire my kicks. My dude Kembo was literally on crutches the next day! -Give thanks to all the folks who worked hard to put that event on for the city. BIG PROPS. Savin’ up my donations for next
year.

Eye Manifest
So there’s this movie I gotta make. It’s been with me for years. In 2009, I decided it was time to do something about it. I vowed to at least check for film school in the fall and see how I might express this vision. Well, Sept came and went. I missed the deadlines because I couldn’t see the resources to make it happen. But I had to remind myself that I am a MANIFESTOR™. I stayed focused on being in the New York Film Academy taking classes instead of worrying how I’d get there. The next thing I knew, I was there! The Universe sent some light my way.

Welcome to Planet Earth
In December we greeted a new (little) man into the world. Beautiful! And it reminded me of something my bros and I speak on a lot, rites of passage. I suppose there’s a lot to be said for desegregation and the growing population of rich Black folks. But as a culture and as a nation we are still lacking in preparation for adulthood, for manhood. His safe arrival encourages me to be the best I can be and to help create a soft place to land.

One the Road Again
I just rolled to Grambling State U (Louisiana) and Dallas, Tx with Fahamu Pecou to shoot a short documentary. He had a solo show at the school and was represented in an art fair in Dallas. It was cool meeting the art students and faculty and learning about their lives. And Dallas was a blast! We chilled out with friends Bill and Sue Sue. As patrons of the arts, they taught me a lot about the amazing art scene and architecture in the city. I even caught up with my peoples Aden and Sara for dinner. Lovely. -Stay tuned for the mini doc…

Coming Together
Another joint I’m working on is a Sexual Kung Fu piece. I’ve gotten some encouraging feedback and ideas from fellow filmmakers. And for those that have been following me, another dream is manifesting! Dr. Sunyatta Amen is coming to Atlanta on March 5th! So I am positioning myself to interview her for this project and hear more about her practice. (BIG UP to Karen Marie Mason) Amen.

Something I wanna address…

F*** a Plan B
As the young people of Grambling State awakened to the inspiration we brought, I recognized a cause for their slumber. In addition to the meager resources the art department has to work with, I witnessed a scarcity mentality that has the potential to arrest their development.

While Fahamu and the faulty hung the art for his show, he says I was “holding court”. -That tends to happen spontaneously when I start speaking of my travels and such. As I exchanged ideas with my new homie Landis, the cipher began to grow. Although the aire of the students was generally hopeful and inquisitive I sensed something darker afoot. It took but a moment to identify the culprit.

Later, on the drive to Dallas, things began to clear. There was something in the language of the people of the art department. As with other Historically Black Colleges, Grambling State University can use some loot! And as is the trend with public schools across the nation, the arts seem to suffer the most. Naturally, this reality would color the way people communicate. What I saw was staff and students working hard under circumstances that are less than ideal.

That’s when ideas like “having a Plan B” begin to dominate thinking and culture. Some say failing to plan is planning to fail, and I agree. But I believe that creating a Plan B that isn’t in alignment with Plan A ultimately nets the same result as having no plan at all!

When we consider that we are co-creators of all that we purvey, we begin to remember our true power. In turn, our language begins to reflect our truth instead of our “reality”. It helps to overstand that so-called reality is an illusion and the only truth that matters is the one we discover when we silence the well-meaning voices and go with in. In my humble opinion, if one wants to be a sculptor, one shouldn’t go to school to study medicine.

As I continue to learn and live by this principle, I encourage all to check their language and protect their dreams. Trust, I can hear all the arguments against what’s been said here. But the stronger I walk my walk, the more those voices are trumped by the voice of my truth. Find yours.

I AIN’T NO JOKE

To say there are double standards in America is like saying the Sun is hot. DUH! That’s why it’s not surprising that people got away with having guns at protests against President Obama. There are people who actually think HE is the anti-Christ!? Consider what that last dude did during his reign. The most deadly weapon to get near him was a flying shoe. -There are still many people in this country who believe a Black life is joke, including many Black people. I suppose the appropriate response is to be offended by this blatant racism. But in my experience that reaction hasn’t changed a damn thing. I KNOW better.

LEGENDS

Saturday night, or should I say Sunday morning, 2 Atlanta giants made people sweat it all out! Kai and Kemit did one of those late night house joints people be lookin’ for. Some of the tastemakers like Tak, Twa, Soul, Tiffany, and Elika came out and made the night right. Camille was in from China, Queen Nirobi blessed the spot, and my girl Afeni got to hear the master Kemit spin for the first time. And to my pleasant surprise, a blast from the past, Akanke snuck up on me. -I need to get out more.

NO COINCIDENCES

So that whole day I was focused on starting the SKF documentary shoot, ASAP. The idea is to get on camera and share some of what I know. I had reached out to a few people to help in producing and shooting the project. But everyone either slept or was too busy to answer. No sweat; I keeps it movin’. So when I ran into Akanke, all the pieces came together. She’s a feature filmmaker and a documentaries! –I was in Fahamu’s office on Monday, asking him if he remember her from back in the day. In she walks to photograph him for a coffee table book! With a smile she says to me “my 1:30 just cancelled. You ready for me to shot you for this book?” Life is beautiful.

DREAMIN’ DREAMS UP

I know this woman named Sahar; she’s incredible. To say we’re friends would be inaccurate since we’ve never had a real conversation. And in the 4-5 years I’ve “known” her I’ve been in her company maybe 5 times. But since day one I was impressed by her shine. She’s a dreamer/doer. I’ve peripherally watched her speak on goals and then birth them at Godspeed. Of course we all have these abilities, but it’s awesome to see it in action; it inspires. Friday evening some friends and I attended one of her newest manifestations. She held a social to launch Dare to Dream, a foundation for young women. Big Up!

COCKTAILS

Miss Meredith invited me to spin at her weekly cocktail party. The room felt good and I had a great time entertaining for a birthday gathering. –I’m a selfish Selector because I’m really spinning for my pleasure. But birthday girl Zoë was feelin’ what I put down so it worked out for everybody. If you’ve never been to P’cheen, it’s definitely worth checkin’ for. I tried the mussels and a side of fries… they were correct!

GOODBYE GEMINIS

Two of my good peoples chose August for their exodus from the A. Eden bounced to New York to show ‘em who’s boss. In her new gig working with a historic photographer, she’s making herstory! And the incomparable Kerisha is leaving Atlanta to flip the script on fools. I’m use to the comings and goings in life, but always feel something when that situation I love comes to an inevitable end. But I love to see growth. *Travel safe and live your highest version of you!

Something I wanna address…

YES WE ARE YOU

So me and the God have been buildin’ a lot lately. I posed the silent questions that used to haunt me. The answers resonated in my chest and abdomen, my head dizzied with excitement. As the truth about who I am pour through me like Niagara, I mastered each breath to maintain my balance. That was a freeing Friday.

I’ll spare you the details of my questions because I imagine that they are the same as yours. But my answers are noteworthy.

I am God. I am the Creator of all that is, so everything that manifests in the life and times of da’shon is. are of my creation. There is no one else to blame for my happiness, no one to thank for my woeful lessons. All the blessings I receive along my journey come from within. The white man is not my oppressor and the Black community is not my celebrator, unless I say so. I can do, have and be whatever I want because the NO-THING that created EVERYTHING designed it to be this way. So I don’t have to strive for success, no lookin’ for love, and trying to be happy becomes an exercise in futility. I AM THAT I AM.

I suppose that if these thoughts have never occurred to you, they may seem a bit jarring. But I know that I am God, and so are you. It seems to me that when we listen to “them” we end up feeling ashamed, embarrassed or confused about who we are. The good book and other religious doctrine, although helpful in establishing an initial connection with the Higher Power, can become a buffer between knowing the word and experiencing your truth. I bet that even if what I’ve said feels a bit uncomfortable, you can still sense your truth in there. Fortunately, you’re not required to believe me. In fact, I’d prefer you didn’t. We’d all do well to discover truth by our individual excavation, through our own remembering.

Present in the answers I received was the rhetorical promise to adhere to my remembered truth. But I now know that I don’t even have to do that. In fact there’s nothing I have to do “but stay Black and die” as my mom’s used to say. Profound. Since I have acknowledged that I am the creator of God’s creation I recognize that the only thing I have to do is what I want to do. And that’s all there is to it.

My prayer is that the whole of humanity has such epiphanies and walks their truth.

Amen.

"That just happened!"

COME CORRECT

So I finally got out to LA and did the first new SKF Lounge installment. I promise I’m not being a typical critical Virgo when I say it wasn’t my best performance. I allowed technical difficulties and fatigue to take me off my game. But I did get what I wanted from the experience: fotos, footage, and feedback. I learned a lot about what to do to make it better. So I’m counting this one as a success. Big up to the left coast for showing me madd LOVE!

AMEN

If you recall, I sent out a public notice that I wanted to speak with Dr. Sunyatta Amen, a belly dance instructor and sexual kung fu practitioner. Well apparently, she heard about it and reached out to me on facebook. At first I didn’t believe it was she. There was no pic with the message and I couldn’t click on the name to lead me to a profile page. With today’s identity theft and general internet f**kery, I wasn’t buyin’ it. When she gave me her personal email, I loosened up, a little. I’d like her to be a part of my future events; I’m waiting to hear back. So I’ll keep you posted as to when and the next joints are going down.

LIFE’S A…

I got to spend some much-needed beach time with the Fam. Sun and sand and ocean, Moms, Sis and my nieces made it a perfect day. Having traveled a lot, I’m probably a beach snob. If you’ve seen the Mediterranean from both sides, you know what I’m talking about! But LA’s good ole Venice beach did me right day. I slept like a baby that night : )

TUNE UP

I finally got a chance to take yoga class from Ms Elika. Wow. It’s been a minute since I’ve been in a real class so I was a little rusty. But her grace and general kindness is welcoming and puts one at ease. Her manner of leading a class is confident, gentle and hums with an undercurrent of love. I’ve done weight training, martial arts, biking, but yoga is my favorite type of workout. It works out the three parts of being, all at once. When I walk away, spirit has been touched, mind is clear and the body moves fluidly. And with Elika running this I felt well cared for. Give thanks for the alignment!

TRUST

My homie Fahamu has immortalized me again. He finally finished the second piece that I modeled for in the “Black Presidential” Series. The first joint I was in, “Can’t Truss it”, the upside-down one, was placed in the Artist Pension Trust (APT). -The thing to note about this joint “Mothering the Evolution” is the absence of the artist. First of its kind.

TRUE
After 9 years on the campaign, last summer I ended my run with the truth™. For those who don’t know, it is the largest anti-tobacco campaign in history. So I just got a chance to meet one this year’s travel teams. We quickly exchanged some tales form the road. Then they had to bounce to work on their video blog. -The first team I had no hand in choosing. And I must say my protégés have done a dope job pulling together the correct squad. Cool kids are runnin’ it!

Something I wanna address…

NONE OF MY BUSINESS

Before I left for LA to do that SKF Lounge event I had a timely blast from the past. I ran into this woman that was a part of a major life lesson, unbeknownst to her. When I was the doorman at a popular nightspot, she was one of the regulars that I wished I’d had the cahones to step to. Turns out she was a fan. Funny how this life works.

One of my biggest fears in life was public speaking, especially in front of Black folks. For the non-Black readers, see Show Time at the Apollo to get a glimpse at how intimidating my peoples can be. So back in the day, I helped my roommate produce one of the first and hottest open mic spots in ATL, “Elevation”. It was so popular that at times the sign-up list to get on stage was down the block. –Anywho, while he was traveling one summer, his girlfriend and I held it down. One day she heard me spitting a rhyme under my breath and was like, “you should do that on stage!” Up until that point, I’d never considered it. My phobia kept this from being a consideration. People will clown me. I’m not gonna make an ass of myself! But her suggestion stirred something in me. I had to crush this fear.

So I used my roommate’s return as an occasion to challenge myself. I remember, on the day I decided to take the stage, I was physically ill that whole day. Sitting in class, I thought I’d pass out. By the time I got to the door that night and signed up on the poetry list, I was in a cold sweat. My roommate sees the list and surprised, asks, “You’re gettin up there?” “Just say my name right man,” I mumbled. By the time I heard “most of you just know him as the doorman. But welcome to the stage, my brother HOPE 2-5!” I could barely walk. Applause? I was so shook, I couldn’t even stand on the small 2’ high stage. So I sat. From this position I was actually lower than to guests sitting at the tables. What are they thinking? I look stupid sitting down here. Here goes…

Strangely enough, after I spoke the first sentence, all the tension that accumulated throughout the day began to dissipate. But by the time I got to the middle of the piece I was struck by the silence. I’d never witnessed that type of engaged stillness in my life. I’d never seen this room that quiet for any real poets. They’re waiting for me to f*** up. So I stopped. Unsure, I asked, “Are you guys still wit me out there?” Standing ovation!!! “Wow! OK, I’m not done yet.” After everyone finally sat back down, I finished this rhyme-turned-poem. In the end I received a second standing ovation. Still dizzy from the receding nervous energy I made a beeline for the men’s room. Before I could reach the handle, that gorgeous woman stopped me in an archway. She clutched my hands in hers and said, “Your words were beautiful”. Is this happening? “Give Thanks.”

Back on my perch at the door my truth began to arise. Growing up, I was always too Black or just not Black enough. Not down enough, too nerdy, too different. I imagine everyone goes through stages of projected inadequacy. But this first solo stage experience taught me that whether people are singing my praises or talking s*** about me, I can’t allow it to matter so much. There’s nothing to prove and no one to prove it to. I have to do the best I can with what I’ve got and KNOW that it’s good enough. Today this mantra manifest as what people think of me is none of my business. When I allow public opinion to be louder than my truth it interferes with God work.

So when I ran into this woman, before going to take the stage in LA, she expressed how happy she was to see me. “Your energy is always so great!” That does an ego good, to be sure. But what’s more important to me is that I radiate good energy and hope that it is being received. My job is to set the good intention and detach from the outcome. When I remember to do that I feel good about me.

DOWN WITH THE KING

This morning I was listening to yet another Michael Jackson tribute on the radio and it sparked something I forgot about. I just remember ed rockin’ sparkly socks and one glove to a holloween party when I was like 11. (I was obviously the chocolate version : ) –He’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My moms has a great story about him: One hot and sticky summer day in Brooklyn, a young MJ and Diana Ross came to the projects and did a free show outside. Say what?! Wish I was there… Alas, the closest I ever got to the King of Pop was watching him moonwalk across the Grammy stage. I’ll never forget that feeling. It’s all me and my friends could talk about for weeks! Regardless of what people feel about him, he made an indelible mark on the planet. Give Thanks.

GARDENING

Despite promoting for less than a week, the Rock Garden party was fun under Atlanta’s setting sun! Some of the homies like Esther, Kamal, and H fell through to support. We had two dope artist projecting their work on a brick wall. Hot. Kembo King and yours truly provided eclectic music creating a perfect backdrop. Very Hot. Corbin kept the beer and wine flowin’ and Tara held down the rest. Cool. The scene was sprinkled with friends and fam and Art Strollers. Even cooler. Throughout the evening the vibes were lovely. -The Garden still needs more tilling, but we expect beautiful growth. See you next time!

REMEMBER GOBOTS?

GoBots were like Transformer wanna-bees. One Xmas I asked my pops for the Autobot Transformer “Shockwave.” But instead of spending big money on the quality product, he bought me a bunch of lame-ass GoBots! –Well, it seems Michael Bay has made a Go-Bot of a movie. I’ve heard nothing but bad reviews from m y friends who’ve seen the flick. One said he waked in the first half hour! Another said that beyond some useless stereotyping, he felt his intelligence was insulted by the stupidity of the film. Speaking of cooning, film critic Ty Burr said the characters Mudflap and Skid are, “Jar Jar Binks times two and the first known example of robot blackface.” Wow. Now I’m an avid movie watcher, and I’ll sometime pay to see a movie that I know is gonna be dumb. I just love going to movies. But this time I think I’ll save my money for quality product.

Something I wanna address…

FREE WILLY?

Over drinks, I told this woman I haven’t put it on anyone in years. She straight up said, “I don’t believe you”. Because I’m quite earnest about such things, I was taken aback by her response. Shouldn’t a man of restraint be appealing to a modern woman? But I guess since we are all liars to some extent, her pause shouldn’t have been so surprising. Well, I’ve kept my good-goods in my pants for many good reasons. Only one reason holds weight for me, but the others are noteworthy.

First of all, living in the A is a challenge for me. It’s got its merits, but it’s very small. There aren’t many places I can go were I don’t run into someone I know. So discretion is an issue. If I happen to be out in the street with one of my lady friends, it’s assumed boots are being knocked. Second, this place is famous for it’s “down-lows”. I don’t concern myself with people’s sexual preferences, but lying about where one chooses to lay spreads more than just contempt!

The main reason I’ve been abstinent for almost 3 years is… you guest it, sexual kung fu. Real talk, sometimes I feel like the man who knew too much! It’s always been difficult for me to have frivolous sex. And before I started practicing this martial art, I always felt a bit of guilt (for lack of a better word) after the act. This happened even if I loved her. Now that I know a few things, when I am getting some, the only thing I feel is peace. At this stage in my journey, I need to be with a woman who knows what she’s doing, or at least patient enough to learn. Anybody can give good…love, but I’ve yet to be with a woman who knows what I know. So most of the time, it’s like Bruce Lee fighting some drunkard in a bar. Might be good for exercise, but ultimately not an equal match. This thing takes cultivation, and because of it’s power, can’t shouldn’t be share with just any ole shorty with a fat booty.

I thought I was the only weirdo out here until recently. I met this brother who’s 40 (looks 30) that’s been off the booty for 4 years! He has also studied skf and shares many of the same view points as I do. Then I ran into a sister who also hasn’t given it up in 4 years. (My 3 don’t seem so impressive). Another friend that I recently introduced sexual kung fu to says she’s about to lock it up too. When I asked why, her response was: “would rather preserve than waste”. That’s as good a reason as any.

I prefer quality over quantity. It’s a little more challenging to say that during the summer time when I wanna tackle any woman with the right curves! So one of the reasons I’ve been offline for a minute is that something fortunate just happened for me. Three years ago I created a dope t-shirt line called MantraBrandTees. I stepped to one of the coolest businessmen I know to partner with me, and we set it off. But because of schedules and other life-stuff, the brand just sat there. Until one day a friend (and the first official ‘fan’ of my Selecta skills) stepped to me on some “you still got that clothing brand? See My Dreams As a Matter Of Fact

I recently faced a challenging dilemma that I’m sure most people can relate to. I’ve been feeling the desire to drastically increase my income. When I expressed this to a friend, he offered me a job. Now although the gig would take care of some neglected bills, it would not be satisfying in any other way. On the other hand, I’ve recently been experiencing promising movement in areas of my life that bring me joy. So the challenge became: take the garaunteed gig for quick monetary relief or stay focused on catching my dream.

Now as the resident “Sage” advisor, I don’t often ask for advice. Not because I’m above it though. Actually, most of my life, I longed for someone to bounce things off of. But oftentimes my weirding way fell on deaf ears. So early on I learned to rely on myself and trust my instincts. Still, I find that talking things out with friends I respect allows me to get it out of my head and see a thing from different angles.

So I did that and I got the answers I expected. Because people generally operate from ego, they will offer advice based of their autobiography. We are all guilty of that. Even though people mean well, we can’t afford to internalize their sentiments. So I just listened. And it was good. I heard everything from “you better get that money” to “you’re gonna regret not pursuing your goal”. And I truly appreciated every heart-felt opinion. But in retrospect, I knew my answer before I asked for counsel.

A while back, it occurred to me that I had to start seeing my aspirations as a matter of fact. I know that it’s the only way I win! At my age I realize that things aren’t just gonna change without me doing something different. Although I believe that we are basically who we are, I know that beautiful things manifest when we begin to think differently. The only reason I was conflicted about which way to go is because I was temporarily stuck on an old path. Our feats get used to moving in the same direction. But with PRESENCE we give space for paradigm shifts. I was taking a shower when the epiphany slapped me upside my head: “I don’t have to take that job!” What I aspire to do, have and be is far more valuable to me. Indeed, my worth is infinitely more than the 3 stacks I would have made on that job. What’s more, the man I want to be and the life I was born to live is a matter of fact. I’m living it right NOW! Jealousy is a Bitch

I have a friend who’s going through it, again. He had another dramatic episode with his lady. You know the kind: two people who obviously care about each other, but instead of saying what’s real, they say things that belittle and hurt the other. As he’s telling me about the argument I had to point out that the real issue was jealousy.

When I was 15, heartbreak forever changed how I would deal with this emotion. My first ‘love’ cheated on me with her ex. After crying about it and smashing shit I had an awakening. First I recognized that I didn’t do anything to deserve it. I’m a good guy who’s honest, and extremely loyal. So if she felt the need to be with someone else, then maybe I didn’t have what she wanted. Either that or she was just shortsighted. I also recognized that there are billions of women on this planet! I’ma always be all right. Trust.

Anywho, I suggested to this friend that people who are overly jealous have issues that only they can work out. In some cases they’ve been cheated on and never learned the lesson I was blessed with. And more often than one would imagine, people are jealous because they are living a lie themselves. Perhaps they’re being dishonest about their own fidelity. I’ve seen that one played out countless times. Either way, we can’t take another’s jealousy personally, and there’s not much we can do to fix it. It’s on the individual to deal with their on esteem.

Jealousy is very natural human emotion that visits us all at some point. Despite how I learned to deal with it, I still feel it on occasion. But it’s never had as dramatic effect as it did when I was a kid. When it comes knockin’, I acknowledge it, but I don’t let it stay long. No time for it.

By the way, the first love (and the girl I kicked with after her) found me on facebook a year ago. She said that I’ve been on her mind for 20 years. Says I remain one of the best people she’s ever known, and she’s always felt bad for how carelessly she treated me. Coincidentally, the other girl found me that same week and said the same thing. I thanked them both for the sentiment and assured them that I’m blessed for the lessons I learned. No hard feelings. There are other women! And we all have the ability to have what we want, so long as we don’t depend on the other to give it.

LA BAM, THE BENCH, THE W -OH MY

Last weekend I rolled out with some friends and checked 3 venues in the A that were new to me. First, my dude Christian Sohl and his lady Charlene took me to DJ Kemit’s surprise B-day brunch. The event space was an “Alice in Wonderland” type venue called Le Bam. Crazy!

The culminating party for Hip-Hop Appreciation week was at The Bench. My homegirl Jodine took me to this b-boy/b-girl hide out. All the heads were there: Binkis Recs, Kaos, Dayo, Starhh, Goldie Gold, Mofioso, etc. That was the joint!

Then we rolled out to the W hotel. Some ATL djs started a free Sunday cool-out on the roof by the pool. There was an eclectic mix of fly people on full lounge mode. Since it was a holiday, they ran 10 Selecta’s from 2-2am. It felt like a touch of Miami, complete with an afternoon rain. Guess where I’m going for Sunday service.

WATCH WHAT YA SAYIN’

So I’m at a BBQ buildin’ with a friend about the power of our words/thoughts. I’m tellin’ him about some stuff I wrote about Big and Pac. “They didn’t have law trouble ‘til they put it in a rhyme.” That’s when he tells me about this kid Dolla from Atlanta getting shot at the Beverly Center in LA. “I just heard about it.” That hasn’t happened in that part of LA since… the Biggie and Tupac days! That’s when this cat approached us and says “I knew him and the shooter”. This guy confirmed that Dolla brought this on himself in the music he made. He told tales of Dolla and the shooter fighting at Lenox Mall in Atlanta, and in the recording studio in the past. According to him they just happened to be on the same flight to LA; there was beef. Then they happened to be at the mall at the same time. He says the kid shot Dolla out of fear because he thought dude was following him. -There are no coincidences. I suppose that if one is not awake these things seem random. Paranoia makes sense. Unfortunately these kids were unaware of their true power. –Bless them both.

RING THE ALARM: 11:11 12/21/2012

THE change soon come my friends, are you ready? As a matter of fact, if you’re awake enough now, you can feel the subtle changes. I have sensed something for a long time now, but last summer I took a quantum leap forward.

First, my friends Sahr and Aeysha put me on to the Mayan Calendar. I was aware of it, but I had not explored it up until they blessed me. In my research I found that I am “Blue Spectral Hand” and my “Spectral Tone” is 11. Apparently, “Eleven is the ray of dissonance”, which was disheartening for a man who believes in harmony. Despite my feeling about this, the rest of what I read was fascinating.

Second, my friend Eva brought her husband Spencer and best friend Crissy to the A from down-under. Although Crissy and I had never met, we knew each other almost immediately. In the time that we spent together she introduced the number 11 to my consciousness and realized she had a dream about me before we met. I was her “angel”; I have that effect on some people (ha-ha). But seriously, this called me to attention because of what I was already learning.

A couple months ago I recognized my intimate connection to the so-called end of the world, December 21, 2012. I added the numbers 1+2+2+1+2+0+1+2 and got 11. A couple days ago while doing more research I found out that this “end” is meant to happen at 11:11am GMT. To be sure, as a Virgo I’m a natural skeptic. I never just believe what I’m being told. I follow intuition, logic and research. But I must point out that as I write this, every time I glance at the clock I get 11. This is not a game.

From what I understand, on this day, all things will line up. We will witness a “harmonic convergence”. It’s been proven by scientist that this happens every 26,000 years. Apparently, the sun, moon, and earth will line up with the center of out solar system, The Milky Way. At that time a vortex of understanding will open up and be available to all that are ready. There’s a lot of speculation as to what we will actually witness. I mean, none of us were around 26,000 years ago to know the truth…were we?

I don’t believe the dooms day hype. I think the people that control traditional media will continue to try and divert our attention from the truth. But I’m not mad, because everything is as it should be in my estimation. I do believe that the end will come to those who are not awake. For those that are, life will never be the same again…

NO COMPROMISE, TELL ‘EM WHO YOU ARE!

I have two friends that are newly in love and embarking on new relationships that are leaning toward marriage. If you’ve been in love, you know the drill; put your best foot forward and do your best to remain perfect in the others eyes. On purpose or subconsciously, this is how it usually goes down, and people don’t share the whole truth about who they really are. As a man I understand this exercise. But coming at this from the spirit realm, where real Love originates, this is an exercise in futility. We do ourselves and the other a disservice when we don’t walk in our truth.

Relationships are not meant to make us happy, they are meant to wake us up. As soon as we realize this, the need to please another by trying to appear perfect becomes unnecessary. Further, we realize that we are responsible for our own happiness. This is the only way that our Love for one another can be fully realized. When our partner is acting the damn fool, we don’t sweat it because we realize our sense of self is not attached to their movements. When we feel down, it’s important to know that although the lover can cheer us up, it’s our job to change our feelings. This is an enlightened relationship and the only type that has a real chance at longevity.

In every type of relationship we have to walk in our truth so that there is no mistaking who we are. No compromise. Come correct!

I put in a little work for my girl Racheal on Saturday. I was madd tired from the night before, but as soon as I played the first record I perked up. Food, music, karaoke (not me), oh what a night! And I don’t generally check for women with children (baby daddy drama), but there was this one that made me kinda warm…

As I mentioned, I’m being immortalized in one of Fahamu Pecou’s paintings. I’m a part of the “Blak Prez” series playing a bodyguard, again. It’s probably the only time you’ll ever see me in a tie! -I think it’s one of his best-executed pieces. Not just ‘cause I’m in it though, seriously, it’s good stuff. I’m always talking shit about how well his image comes out, and how his guest stars don’t look as good as he does. Now I eat my words. It’s so dope that he’s hanging it upside down! Sweden won’t know what hit ‘em!

My homie and her boyfriend were in town so I took them to witness a part of ATL tradition. We didn’t really get all up in it, just kinda walked through. If you’re from the A, you know it ain’t like it used to be! But I did grab one of those big-ass turkey legs : ) They found something to suit their palette, we found a patch of grass and people-watched. A perfect Saturday down south. But it’s time to give up meat and get right…

I just recently read that a 35,000 year-old Venus-like sculpture was found in Germany. The Hohle Fels cave is were archeologists found the world’s oldest human carving. -This reminded me of a story I read about the Nazi’s. Apparently when they went on their rampage to create their new religion they buried some of the religious artifacts they stole. Supposedly, these paintings and figurines depicted African deities and saints (Jesus and Mary). Makes me wonder how many hidden treasures the ego has buried…

FOCUS
I had lunch with Ebony who is a follower of the sayWHAT?!™ blog. She’s asked me to speak on how to stay focused. There are countless ways to get one’s mind under control. I’ll do my best to lay down some basics, but this topic warrants more discussion. -The mind is a powerful tool and great servant but a horrible master.

In my journey, before I could think about focusing on tasks, I had to learn to stop thinking. Unchecked, our thoughts run on non-stop and get us into far more trouble than most realize. I had to first understand that I am not my mind or my thoughts. I am the spirit that animates this beautiful body and dynamic brain. Once I understood this, the mechanics of focus became much easier.

Here’s an easy way to build focusing power: a breathing meditation. I sit quietly, somewhere
I won’t be distracted. I focus all of my attention on the inch behind my navel, my center. Yes, I contemplate my navel! I inhale all the way to the bottom of my lungs, extending my belly all the way out. Babies are good at this and do it naturally. Once I feel full of air, I slowly release the air, flattening my stomach, and trying to make my navel touch my spine. All of this happens through the nostrils in slow, controlled intervals. Sometimes I count the second to make the inhale and exhale even. Focusing on the mechanics of breathing has remarkable healing power, not to mention it unlocks our ability to master our minds.

Be easy on yourself and don’t force any part of the exercise. It’s very challenging in the beginning, but ANYONE can do this. And by the nature of doing this regularly, it gets easier and your whole life comes into focus. –When unwanted thoughts come in, don’t get frustrated. Allow the thoughts to dissolve into the rhythm of your breathing. Don’t give thoughts your full attention, focus only on your breathing and the thoughts will fade away.

I’ve been forced to live without my idiot box for 2 weeks now. At first I bucked, naturally. But as I’ve done it before, it wasn’t long before I settled into the silence. I purposely don’t have cable, so all that left me was wack TV channels anyway. I have appreciated hearing and organizing my thoughts again. It’s easy to forget that we are not our minds. And with constant stimulation from TV to Twitter, when do we have time to sit in silence? As a meditator I recognize the importance stillness. –Anybody want an old TV?

ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING
In all my years on the planet I’ve somehow managed to escape changing a single diaper! How? It takes cunning my friends. Always wear a condom, pull out… oh! and if you smell something funny around anybody under 3 feet tall, walk in the other direction. (Maybe do that anyway). Somehow I think my little homie Go Go sensed my disdain for all things stinky and held his BM ‘til his mom and dad’s return. Thanks little man. Let’s hang out again sometime!

SUGAR HILL BABY
It seems another era has ended. Although I missed Yin Yang’s final party 10 years ago, last night’s close out at Sugar Hill gave me something. The who’s who of the A represented. The performers were off the chain and the vibe was right. The heads and I long for feeling that is long gone, change is inevitable. It’s the one thing we can count on. I'm now understanding that creating what’s next is time better spent!

MOLESTATION CLOSURE

I believe pedophilia and general molestation is a result of the repression of human sexuality. I’m no doctor and I’m sure there are other factors. I’m speaking for someone who’s been abused and has heard countless stories. It seems that when a person’s sexuality is hindered in anyway, it will find a way to be expressed. Deviant behavior is an unfortunate side effect of hypocritical societies.

And I mean no disrespect or judgment on the paths that people take. But I've noticed that in religions were leaders are sworn to celibacy, we find abuse. In some cultures, sex with children is common practice. Wherever there is an oppressive view on what we are “allowed” to do with our bodies, we can count on violations.

Before I began practicing Sexual Kung Fu 12 years ago, I probably just felt like most people: castrate abusers, jail ‘em, kill ‘em! But with a new understanding of what sexuality is, and how our sensibilities are constantly being assaulted through media corporations, my paradigm shifted. I still think that sane people should be punished, but that’s not remotely enough. I believe understanding and prevention are way overdue. But we can’t wait for “them” to do something about it. It’s up to individuals to change this world.

My contribution to the eradication of such abuse is a more intense form of sex ed. It’s my opinion that Sexual Kung Fu will completely change the game. I sense that when people are empowered by a true sexual knowledge of self, abuses become less likely. Not only that, teen pregnancy, early sex, dis-eases, and general health problems are all lessoned by learning these lessons.

I don’t feel like a victim. I can laugh at the devil on Family Guy. I know who I am and recognize that this reality is created by me. It is my hope that all who’ve been abused can at least reach the place I am. It is my intention to empower people to move well beyond. That nasty shit has got to stop!

So when the homie Sanniyah Griffin said she was doing a benefit, I volunteered my DJ services. Honestly, I don’t do charities and benefits in the traditional manner. Not because I don’t care. It’s that I recognize that calling for a war on terrorism, for example, does nothing but and fuel. The constant attention to what we don’t want creates an orgy of negative manifestation. But I digress. -I wanted to spin and have fun and get educated, and I did! Give thanks to Sunny and big up to Avery Sunshine : D

That dude Cosmo I introduced you to, with the “CP Time Machine” did an ill art show last weekend! This project explored “memory, both individual and communal, and myths, those newly created and inherited.” I DJ-ed this joint too so the vibes were lovely and so were the people who came thru. Spread Lovely
Speaking of Tiff… she’s always saving the last dance for me. Making me feel kinda speshu : ) But I’ve missed the last few parties, and she’s been quick to remind me! So I cut out of the art show early and connected with her at Spread Love. If you don’t know how Kemit puts it down, you’re sleepin’. He dropped one of my favorite joints, and I went on the hunt for the one they call Sista T (aka the Butta Fly). She worked my ol’ bones so hard, I wasn’t right ‘til Monday. I’ma come correct next time Love!

The Monies
DJ Phil Money came thru the A to rock his sister in-law’s graduation party. So I went to the Big house to get my BBQ on. The Money Family knows how to throw a shindig. Yo, there was food everywhere, a pool, of course good music, and later that night… strippers!? At one point I was holding down the tables with a Reggae set. I heard a commotion behind me, so I turned to investigate. And there they were, the breast I was admiring only moments earlier where now free! I didn’t throw money or cop a feel; not really my steeze. But I admire a fine cup like the next man : D When’s the next jump off Phil?

Something I wanna address…

MOLESTATION 2

For a long time I’ve had an aversion to old white men. It wasn’t something I was aware of for many years though. This quiet, specific hate didn’t stem from their knack for oppression, rape and pillage (they don’t have a corner on that market), but because my second molester was an old white man. In fact, the pedophile character on Family Guy reminds me of this dude.

It started typically, simply and innocently, as these things do. In my Biloxi Mississippi neighborhood, he was the cool old man that loved little Black kids. I started hanging out at his house because my friends said we could go there and do what we wanted. Eating my fill of Oreos, trying cigarettes, and gettin’ money were appealing to this 8 year-old explorer.

And then the day came. Apparently it was my turn. –There was a roller skating party that evening that I desperately wanted to attend. Portia was gonna be there! But as was the usual scenario, Moms didn’t have the money. Desperate to get to my crush, I had the idea to ask the old man if I could do chores for the loot. Naturally, he was more than happy to oblige. And no work was required. “Just look on that shelf in the closet and take what you need.”

“OK, thanks! I gotta go. See you tomorrow…”

“Why are you leaving so quickly? At least come give me a hug before you go.”

If not before, this is when my antenna sensed things were taking a bad turn. But he gave me money. I could give the old man a hug. When I sat down in his lap I realized he was nude under that blue robe and he was erect. Before I could react, his hand was down the front of my pants. I don’t remember saying anything or slamming the door behind me. I just see me bolting out the front door before it went where I knew it could go.

Of course, I wasn’t in a festive mood that night. I’m sure my best friend was upset by my lack of enthusiasm about chasing girls and skating. I saw Portia once that night, but I didn’t speak. In fact, I didn’t say anything to anyone about what happened, until…

One day there was a bang at the door. Had to be the police with a rap like that! When I saw 3 angry Black moms through the peephole, I instinctually knew what was up. “Is your Momma home?” “Yes Mam, please come in. Mom!”

After I told my mom what happened to me, I found out how lucky I was. Apparently the old man got a lot more physical with the other younger boys in my ‘hood. If I recall correctly, it ended with him being sentenced to 7 years in prison. I can picture him looking pathetic in county orange and shackles.

When I was 19, I was doing a cleaning job for two Priests who lived together. For my great work I received a gratuity and a pat on the back. That pat made my skin crawl!!! On the long drive home, it hit me. My reaction was the result of what happened to me. I was happy for the realization because I know that repressing this sort of thing is not a good look. That experience has kept me more aware.

A young friend hit me up about this new kid she just met. She was excited about the meeting because he came correct. He’s a Virgo and she’s a Gemini, so the conversation was correct. She did some math and their birth-path numbers line up. So now what?

How do I know he’s real? How can I know if he’s being truthful about his intentions? What if…? –In our conversation I could hear her plottin’ and schemin’ to get to the truth. “Why don’t you just ask what you want to know?”

-In my experience, most people want to be honest. And if given a chance, people are, to some degree. But in my opinion, media and society perpetuate the misguided ‘need’ to misrepresent, beat around the bush, or just lie. And what people lie about is ridiculous! Age, income, and relationship status are the hot ones. But I think that it’s everyone’s duty to break this stupid habit.

If we want trustworthy relationships, we have to be trustworthy. Of course, just because you’re real doesn’t mean everyone you know will transform. But as we are more authentic in our movements, we begin to attract like minds. When the people you deal with on the regular know how you rock, they tend to rock with you. At the very least, your integrity gives rise to the ability to see others dishonesty. I can’t pretend I know how this works. But the muscle that allows us to see clearly is developed by our correct actions.

I say give people a chance to be truthful. If we’re in tune with our own truth, theirs is easy to recognize. Besides, someone else’s lack of integrity should not give us license to slip on ours. The more we expect good, the more good comes our way.

BTW – Gemini / Virgo combo is great for communication and friendship, but a long-term commitment is challenging!

It’s like a bad movie to me. Republicans protesting the President’s economic policy by invoking a 17th century act of rebellion. A perfect illustration on how out of touch they are from most. Even if they are in on their own joke, the shit is just silly to me. And what’s even sillier is that most people still don’t see this whole thing for what it truly is. It’s all one big lewd ACT! No HOPE for truth™
Well not really. I’m sure they’ll be fine without me. For those that don’t know, I worked with this anti-tobacco campaign for the past 9 years (oh, and people called me HOPE). Last year I decided that it was time for me to move on and do my tings-an-ting. So this past Monday, five of my former employees converged in Atlanta to prepare for this summers nation-wide tours. -I’ll miss you guys, but this groundbreaking program is in very capable hands! Safe travels.

Rite Pass
Last fall my homie had a naming ceremony for his son. It was a great experience and I think it’s a needed first Rite of Passage for American children. Ten years ago was the first time I considered what sort of difference these rituals would have made in my life. Around the time of the ceremony is when I realized that I wasn’t alone in this notion. Something I wanna address…

Molested Part 1

I had my first sexual experience at age 5. Way too young to even be thinking about such things, but I did. Maybe it was the music my parents listened to. Maybe TV gave my impressionable mind a start. Maybe it was that one time I walked in on my folks ruffling up the couch pillows under red light. I still don’t like being in a red-lit room! I don’t know how or exactly when my curiosity was aroused but I was pretty young. Curiosity may have killed that cat, but it gave me a chance to play “house”.

Basically, a family member molested me. I was playing alone in a room. I was startled when the door swung open. I was caught humping my wife (a stuffed animal) on the couch (a big toy box). This intrigued the onlooker. Rather than busting me, to my surprise I was left alone. At that age, I knew what I was doing was “wrong”, but it seemed my innocent explanation sufficed. But she returned a short while later with an offer I couldn’t refuse. “You wanna do that for real?” “Yeah”, I said. Thus began my premature exploration.

I’ll spare me the details, but it turned nasty. The first time I liked it. Well, as much as a 5-year-old boy could. I mean, I chose to be there, well, as much as a 5-year-old boy could. But just like any child with a new toy, it got old quick. When I refused to revisit the act, my playmate turned vicious. Perhaps she thought I’d tell my mom on her. I had no intentions on doing that; my mom swung a mean belt! At that age all I knew was I was engaged in something bad that I initially volunteered for. That just felt like an ass whoppin’ waiting to happen. So, to keep me quiet I was threatened, locked in a dark tool shed at night, and otherwise verbally abused. Curiosity didn’t kill me, but it left a scar.

I was talking to a friend the other day about how one’s first sexual experiences color the rest of our relationships. Good, bad or ugly, how we cope with the first time will inform how we deal with future partners. I’m sure that I take sex so seriously because of my childhood traumas. In my friend’s case, he said his first time motivated him to do the opposite of what he experienced. So then this notion begs the question; what was a molester’s first experience like? Are they blindly acting out patterns or are they making a cognizant choice to be deviant?

Molestation and pedophilia is pandemic. I believe that those of us who are in a position to do so should speak on it. Let me be clear, I don’t mean we should pick a bright colored ribbon as a symbol and take to the streets. In my opinion, that sort of thing adds fuel to the fire. I’m saying, telling one’s story from an enlightened place of presence can be of benefit to another people who has buried their own abuse.

The Joy of Letting Go
At some point we’ve all gotta let go of something. I believe the issue is that we fight against what is, and we make things worse. He dumped you, she embarrassed you, they did you wrong. When our feelings are hurt, it’s tough to ignore. But we have to decide what we love more, the drama or generally feeling good.

For most people letting go is the hardest thing to do. When we invest time and effort into something that disappoints, it stings. And if we mistakenly wrap our self worth in something that is beyond our control, well, you know the out come. But I know that when I pause, and embrace some fundamentals of being, letting go becomes as easy as opening my hand and watching ‘it’ fall.

It boils down to controlling one’s ego. The best thing I do for myself is remembering that this pesky ego lives in the past and the future. The things that happened to us are done. The things we fear may happen have not happened. The ego’s job is to keep us bouncing back and forth between these 2 points in time. Because of that, most people remain stuck on the pain, disappointment, and frustrations of things that are already dead and gone! We can easily control the ego by being present. We can easily let go by being present.

I know it sounds too good to be true, but would I lie to you? Don’t just believe me, try it. Something got your chones in a bunch? Imagine yourself holding that thing in your hand really tightly. Now, open your hand and watch that thing drop. Turn, walk away, and never look back. And if your mind wonders back to that thing you don’t want, repeat the process. We humans tend to make things more dramatic than they have to be. This practice will change your life.

He wasn’t really planning to do a show, but I’m gonna encourage it. Here’s what he has to say about it: “My C.P. Time Machine project attempts to take the viewer through the psyche of Afro-centric Blackness, past the memory of pain, death, unity, dysfunction, happiness and finally to the mythical Africa.” Let ‘em know Sun!

Something I wanna address…

Monogamy

I once read that only 6% of all living creatures on Earth take one mate for life. With those types of stats, monogamy seems more like a matter of preference, at least for some species. Humans are the sentient beings with the ability to make the choice. It makes one wonder if monogamy is natural for all of us.

Building with a male friend who’s in a committed relationship, he shared that he loves more than one woman. This is an obvious problem for someone who claims no desire to break up with his lady. But the love for another feels good enough that he’s conflicted about giving it up. This one is not a mere sexual endeavor; it was founded and grows from friendship. Now it would seem that the answer to this dilemma is obvious, especially to women and those who’ve been cheated on. But is it?

Yesterday, a Christian female friend shared her feelings on the matter. Her view is that the European model of right and wrong effects how people deal with relationships and marriage. She says, as a woman who’s been married before, monogamy ain’t for everybody. She’s now seeing someone who’s in a relationship and things are working perfectly. I don’t imagine this would sit well with the flock. But is she wrong for rockin’ it her way?

Another person I know handled his situation differently. As a self-proclaimed dog, he’d never been in a relationship where he didn’t cheat. After a year of monogamy with the woman he plans to marry, that old feeling started coming back. When he shared this, I advised him against falling back into old patterns. My message was, regardless of the out come, if he truly loved his lady, he must be honest with her. To my surprise, he had the talk. Because of this, his woman suggested they invite another female into the mix. It’s all working out for them. What’s wrong with that?

I am “the world’s most sensual sage” but I’ve also done some dirt! I’ve never cheated on anyone. I happen to like being with one woman at a time and I’m extremely loyal. But I have cheated with someone. It was not a pleasant experience. I couldn’t enjoy the sex because of the immediate guilt. And for me, the best sex is when I can free up and be deeply intimate. The rest is cute and whatnot, but I like to get up in there. But I digress…

My feeling is that honesty always works out best. Regardless of the outcome, we should always come correct.
Like my moms used to say “I ain’t gotta do s#!7 but stay Black and die.” -A person has only to answer to themselves and their Higher Power. The rest will sort itself out. I don’t know if how my friends move in their relationships is correct, nor do I care. I just want them to be happy and to be the best they can be. In my experience, being real means never having to apologize for who we are. The decision to be monogamous should be satisfied by individuals, not by institutions with agendas. LOVE.

The Universe is Self Aware Through You

When I first read that sentence, it resonated with me. Like the statement “God is right now”, it truly exemplifies my feeling about being “here”. And the more I overstand what this means, the more I understand what I need to do. Nothing.

This occurred to me the other night, again. See if this makes sense to you: All the religions that I know of, claim that we are made in the image of the Being we call God. This Being is everywhere; there’s no place it is not. This all powerful Being can naturally do, have and be whatever it chooses because it is the Creator of all that is. You wit’ me? –So if we humans are made in its image, what powers do we possess?

Amit Goswami claims that without the human mind to witness it, the Universe can’t exist. Consider that. If you know anything about quantum physics, you know that the building blocks of the Universe act in accordance to the observer. If a scientist predicts that a quantum particle will bounce twice, roll and stop, when observed, the particle will do EXACTLY that. What powers indeed!

My truth is that I am GOD, and so are you. I believe that my desires are the ALL seeking expression through me, one of it’s many vessels. The want for more money for example, is the Universe wanting to express wealth. The want for happiness is Gods want for happiness. I believe all of our dreams and goals are our birthright. There is no need to compete for anything because what God wants it Creates! "There's nothing we have to do, there's only what we want to do." The best thing we can do is get the hell out of the way!

Be Wealthy.

BLACK LIKE ME?
My boy invited his friends over to critique his art. It turned into a great discussion about being Black. It occurred to me that all of these Black intellectuals were degreed, articulate and well informed. As we came together over fried chicken and potato salad to share stories of our journey, I sensed a familiar something. Although we share a cultural background, I still got the feeling that they didn’t see what I see. My ego would have me believe it’s because I don’t have a degree in anything. “They’re just smarter than you.” Spirit knows better. Regardless of the setting it’s my nature to rebel, to seek difference. I believe that even when we come together as one, we must always honor individuality. It helps us to evolve. –My mantra: appreciate the similar and celebrate the different.

MY ADDIDAS
A crew of us went to an art show at the Addidas store. Nice turn out, and I ran into some familiar faces I hadn’t seen in a while. One of which was the DJ Dibiasi. We met a couple years ago when Kembo and I did a Wednesday nite set called “Port au Patois” (don’t ask). I heard he could spin, so I invited him to get on in between sets. Kid is nice. Now his name is everywhere. Anywho, I’m looking around the space like, “I can rock this place.” So I’m talking to my dude Jose who runs the spot; he used to come to our Wednesdays. ASSISTED LIVING
It seems my dream team is finally coming together. I (virtually) met a cool woman who seems to have the ability to help me forward a project. I’ve been working on this so long that I can’t help but be optimistic about things manifesting. They are! Plus I’ve got two homies in Dallas who have just been waiting for me to get my $#!+ together so they can work their magic. –I now see my ideal life coming into view. Give thanks!

Something I wanna address…

SUPER CONSCIOUS
Black consciousness has always been a curious notion to me. When I was in high school (88-91) knowing ones Blackness was becoming popular. Thanks to crews like Native Tongues, Public Enemy, and X-Clan, kids were seeing themselves in a new light. We felt a pride that we weren’t able to find up until that point. But instead of unity, I saw teenage egos create a divide. If you weren’t “conscious” then you were an Uncle Tom worthy of a beat down. There was still something missing.

This past week I’ve seen themes of self-loathing and self-love being played out repeatedly. A panel discussion about light verses dark skin left 12 year old girls in tears as they shared their accounts. A couple, both of biracial heritage, spoke to me about not being Black enough. Even 60 years after the “Doll Test” was first conducted, this week’s new results still stir up more questions than answers. -The obvious and subtle brainwash that has been perpetrated on the people of Earth is astounding.

Back in high school, what really confounded me were the “Super Conscious” Black kids. These are my people who know history, read Malcolm X, were at every Spike Lee joint on opening night, and started giving up perms for a natural. And if you didn’t have a distain for everything non-Black, then you weren’t Black enough. You guessed it; in most cases I didn’t quite make the cut. Unlike most of them, I was traveled. I had experience that can’t be had growing up on the block. I’d met people and seen things that afforded me a broader world-view. But try explaining that to teenage militants who were just learning about Huey P. Newton! They weren’t tryin’ to hear what was something missing.

I had never been more proud to be Black than my first adult trip to Europe. Ironic though it seems, seeing my beauty reflected in the eyes of “strangers” gave me another perspective to consider. The first part of my life I hated my dark skin and nappy hair and big lips! But my self-loathing was hand delivered by unsuspecting agents. There has only been one white person who ever had the gall to call me nigger to my face. I was about 7. But my bothers and sisters have been the more reliable sources of hate. So to be in countries where people don’t know me, yet celebrate my swagger was eye opening. By that summer of ’98 I was walking my brand of Blackness. My dark skin and long nappy hair became my badge of pride. Men admired, women swooned. That missing thing was coming into view.

What I recognized in high school is what I know now: there is only one consciousness. What we experience as separation is the ego’s need to feel superior. And for a race of people who have been shitted on for centuries, the want to reverse the current is understandable. But it’s silly and futile in the end. My blessed upbringing has put me in a unique position to understand the truth, as I see it. I am proud to be a Super Conscious Black man. That is how I manifest in this plane of existence. And if I had to come back and do it again, I’d elect to be a Black man every time. The truth is that I am a spiritual being living a very human experience. I am the Universe seeking expression through the physical form, da’shon is. I am God, the Super Conscious Being. And so are you.

I got great responses to the open letter I wrote to my father in the last blog. One was a reminder that we should never try to wake a sleepwalker. Apparently it’s dangerous. I started to consider what this means in the context of helping people “wake up” to their lives. After all, this is a major part of why I’m here!

People have always told me I’m a good listener. Friends and fam have always come to me for advice or to just get things off their chests. And I don’t know what it is, but I have the ability to listen deeply and care genuinely, and often times help with my observations. When I was in my 20’s my ego lead me to start doling out unwanted advice. I realized that wasn’t the way to go.

“You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink”. Gospel. -It’s been a challenge to except my limitations when it comes to helping people. I see answers to questions that haven’t been asked. But to give these answers before they are sought can lead to strained relations. Trying to force someone to wake up before they are ready causes unnecessary drama in their growing process.

What I’ve learned is to simply fall back, and wait for my chance to be of service. If I can see a way to help without stepping on toes, then I do. Otherwise, my time is better spent minding my own business.

WINTER IN THE SPRING
Ahh… WMC, it’s like spring break for grown folks. For years it’s been a Mecca for beach bums and dance music drones. In the last week of March, Miami becomes a wholly place of DJ worship. The scene seduces with thongs, party-favors, and lots of sweaty dancing. But in a city that doesn’t see snow, why is their hottest spring-fling called the Winter Music Conference? Things that make you go…. “shhh! Wait! Awww snap! They playin’ my s***!”

NEW MOON, YOU SAW ME STANDING ALONE
My moon-sign friend Crissy likes to remind me “you’re never alone”. There is obvious truth to that. But there are things in life we must arrive at on our own. And as I do my best to live in the rhythm of our planet, on March 26 at 4:07pm, EST, I stood alone. I took time to honor the New Moons hidden face, and revealed my own. Wow that sounds corny (ha-ha : ) But it’s true. There’s a lot going own, things that would have overwhelmed me before. But my alarm reawakened me at 4:07. I had to stand alone to see the face of my power.

Something I wanna address…

Dear Pop,

I pray that you wake up. I know that if you were awake, you’d see what I see; you’d know what I know. I don’t know if you’ve ever been awake… aware. I do know that I exist because of and despite your level of consciousness.

I bet you don’t know that when you’re in pain, I feel you, literally. When you allow your dis-ease to dictate your paradigm, your hurt resonates. When you put the glass to your lips, death emanates as the poison elixir washes away your truth. I bet you don’t consider our quantum connection, father and son. You’re not in it alone. You’re not just killing yourself.

I’ve had to find myself without the steady guidance of elder men. It’s been a challenging sojourn. Since you didn’t have a steady male mentor either, it seems these challenges are inherent. So doesn’t now seem like a good time to wake up? Isn’t evolution, elevation… isn’t love the goal? -I now know that I was born into these circumstances to cause dissonance in this stupid cycle. I know who I am because of and in spite of you.

Dad, you once shared with me that you’ve never tried hard at anything. That sounds crazy to a kid who thought his dad was the smartest man in the world! When I shared this with my sis we realized that this must be one of our inherited traits. Imagine; the awards, the accolades, the relationships, the materials that we’ve experienced have come without much conscious effort. We’re just naturally dope. Now imagine what wonders we can witness when we are intentional in our movements. The “try” is trumped by the deliberate doing.

You might not know this but the first new moon of spring gives us a chance at new beginnings. I don’t know all of the circumstances that put you in the hospital this time. I don’t know why you haven’t found your power yet. But I do know that the present is a gift we can’t afford to sleep on. “Every passing moment is another chance to turn it all around”. Dad, I am Creator da’shon is., and I am awake! I know what I’m here to do, and it’s spectacular! I want you to see it manifest. I pray that you wake up so that you can see that this life is exactly what we make it, from NOW on.

My homie Tia and I checked out the tribute to Jax of Binkis Recs. I didn’t really know him but I’ve been aware of him and the whole crew since the 90’s. And last night’s guests were a who’s who of ATL fam: Dres tha Beatnik, Senor Kaos, Ekundayo of Liuns Den, Stahrr the Femcee, Goldie Gold, and Phife of ATCQ. –When I heard Jax passed, two blocks away from my crib, I was f***** up! He was younger than me, so I naturally had to reflect on my own mortality. I pray that when I pass, there’s at least as much love as there was in that room last night. Give thanks for sharing your light Brov.

ORIENTATION
Speaking of Dres, he told me he’s gonna be in China for a month. I have a homie in Biejing I’m trying to see. I wanna go over to explore and spin. And I know how Dres do; he’s going over there to take care of bit-niss. Perhaps we’ll cross paths Bro!

STAR TREATMENT
I just picked up Fahamu from the airport. He’s coming off another successful trip to Dallas. I played his bodyguard for the first art show he did there. That show created a pretty loyal following so he keeps getting invited back. So this time he did an 80’s party where he dressed-up like Sho’Nuff from The Last Dragon. The next day he did a talk. –Now I’ve been charged with doing his official Neo Pop Star Tour ’09 Mix Tape. Keep your ears open for that.

It’s About Time!

Nowadays, I find myself to be more present than I ever have been in my life. Maybe it’s because I have declared PRESENCE to be my main life goal. Since that time I’ve recognized a steady increase in my ability to be “here”. Life is better.

Once I realized that the only way I could really be happy is to be present, I started to manifest things more quickly. Here’s what I’ve learned so far: The best way to get to NOW is to pay attention to my breath. When I do that, I’m automatically present. When I’m present, I immediately express gratitude for being present. The gratitude comes from feeling, KNOWING that the Universe is Love. I understanding that an abundant, loving Universe (or God) is all that there IS. I know that I’m made from the same stuff that everything in the Universe is made of. I know that there is no distance between the Universe and I. I know I want only the best for myself. I know that this want in me is the Universe seeking self-expression through me. When I remember that I’ve got a whole Universe behind me, how could I not be filled with joy and give thanks!

And so, I practice Dynamic Presence every time I notice that I’m not present. The amazing thing about presence is once I figured out what it is, it became remarkably easy to access. The easiest way I’ve found is by noticing how I feel from moment to moment. If I’m not pleasantly at peace, than I’m not fully present. That thought alone is enough for me to get back here. And when I am here, in control of my mind, I either stay focused on having what I want now, or I stop thinking. The latter is admittedly more challenging, but that’s what makes it dynamic!

I was doing this the other night, being present, and it felt like I was folding time. I was able to hold my ideal life in the present moment for longer than I’d ever done before. It was an amazing ride. As I stood in my kitchen in the wee-hours of the morning I witnessed my entire life from a now perspective. At some point I became aware of the tic-toc of a clock. I realized that I didn’t know what time or day it was. I was beyond time. A new epiphany arose that is beyond words. I see that all the power, courage, wealth, and happiness, can only be accessed by my fully being here.

Life is better because I say it’s so. Growing up with depression and not having access to resources either kills you or creates a path to a powerful life. I’m here, so I must be on the journey of my choosing.

Think what you want…
Some people earnestly believe things that others would deem outrageous. Some people think same sex relationships are ok. Some believe interracial love is the most beautiful kind of love. Some feel alive when they cheat on one love with another luv. Some don’t even believe in love or relationship. Who am I to judge? I believe I’m meant to be with a woman born on June, 23 1977.

I suppose it’s strange that I should know so much about this woman. But body conscious Americans might find it strange that some cultures hold big-booty women with stretch marks in high regard. The point is, one person’s “strange” is another’s every day life. I’m sure the reason most of us keep our beliefs to ourselves is the fear of being called out. But imagine how wack life would be if you had to think only what others approved of.

The ability to think and control ones thought’s is a true gift! An animal can’t think, “I want to go to the moon”, and make it happen. This is unique to the human experience. It’s our birthright to think what we want! In order to have what we want, we must exercise the ability to think it into existence. Of course “work” is required, but it starts with original thought. Never mind what they say, use this gift your way.

BLOCK PARTY
Big up to Christian for inviting me out to his party in the Saturday sun! I was the first Selector to get behind the wheels of steel (and the Serato box and my laptop). The theme was Latin/Caribbean but he said I could go anywhere I wanted. So I whetted their appetites with some of my music first (NEVERUMIND) and then I took ‘em out there. Then Mafioso got on and killed it with ill blend of latin, hip hop, dancehall vibration. I haven’t had that much fun in a minute!

TEARS OF APPRECIATION
My girl Eesh says she was getting misty-eyed as she sent me an email in response to my “WATERMELON MAN” story in the last blog. The story resonated with her because she was raised by a Grandparent and understands the majesty of elders. Her sentiment is the reason I’m sharing my truth in this format. There is a Universal thread that runs through all of us. And regardless of where we come from, we truly have more in common than we know. -I appreciate the encouragement!

BACK IN THE DAY
I was tagged in this old school photo in front of what used to be Yin Yang Music Café. Although I was the doorman, I wasn’t actually in the picture, but my t-shirt was. (d a’ s h o n)25 was my first brand, and it was born and fueled by the energy of that era. Kembo’s open mic “Elevation” started many careers and spawned many copycats around Atlanta. India Arie, Donnie, Black Thought, Erykah Badu, and Anthony David are just a few of the folks that either got their start of honed their craft on that stage. Before it became Apache Café, Yin Yang was a vortex of talent and expanding ideas. There’ll never be another. –Thanks for that trip back!

Something I wanna address…

WELCOME TO MY WORLD:
A friend pointed out that this so-called financial crisis has people thinking about what their lives are worth. I am very fortunate to have people in my life who genuinely love me for who I am and not for what I have. To the casual observer, I don’t have much. Of course I can’t speak for them but I want to believe it’s because people can sense that I value them and understand what relationships are worth. But then I have been called a lazy dreamer who expects too much.

Being homeless for 5 months began to change my self-worth. I was in LA, a place notorious for superficiality, when I had to really determine what my life was worth. The feeling of being a grown man who couldn’t keep up with the Jones was emasculating. Seeing people with shiny stuff I couldn’t have was frustrating. I got to a depressed, abysmal place. When I could get no lower, the light came from an unexpected place.

People who derive their self-worth from their net-worth are going through it right now. In a time when one can lose one’s job as easily as catching a cold, things are looking madd nervous. It’s hard not to see the world through the lens of a capitalist when we’re born and raised in this religion. When the answer to 99/100 questions is money, where does the light, the answer, come from?

I lost my religion when I began to define my worth. I started to recognize that my true value comes from knowing who I am and what I have to offer the world. I now know that we are only limited by our imaginations. I no longer judge myself based on what’s in my pocket or what people think of me. Something powerful happens to us when we take charge of our lives. When we stop placing blame for our situation or fighting against what is, we become empowered. Try this: perhaps the economic situation is such because it’s time for a complete over haul in how we view our lives. Instead of using this time for wide spread panic, we should be cleaning up our houses, so to speak. I’m with Gandhi, “my life is my religion”.

This lazy dreamer expects that things will work out; they always do. I don’t have a “job” but my worth is immeasurable! My world is perfection in process. I see current situations as manifestation of what I was thinking about before. With this logic, if people spend today in panic mode about not having a job, they can expect to not have one tomorrow. So in my lazy moments I dream about what I expect to happen. Then I wake up and make it happen. I know that my seeming flights of fancy don’t put food in your mouth. I know there are people that don’t think highly of me, based on the capitalist model. I know what people think of me is none of my business anyway. I know that I’m a very Blessed Black Billionaire ; D

THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT
On the evening of my little sister’s 8th wedding anniversary I realized something about sharing one’s truth. I was talking to some married friends about their challenges. They were going on about how demanding it is to work in the partnership and raise children. They were also advising me about the road ahead. As a single man who has never slipped one past the goalie, how do I interject my truth in order to be of service to them?

Logic dictates that the elder, more experienced person has all the answers. After we’ve been around the block a few times, even the dumbest of us picks up a lesson or two. Some of us have the inclination to share these lessons, these truths. And it’s my experience that a five year old can hit you in the head with some timely wisdom. But that kid has to have the stones to say what they feel. And they usually do.

In our conversation I found myself biting back my truth. These married folks are in an experience I have not yet had. And naturally they were advising me from their own understanding. But I saw some truths I didn’t share because, who am I?

I am a SEER. In both cases, I saw some stuff before these folks were married that were warning signs of the road ahead. Sometimes I shared what I had, but most of the time I kept what I saw to myself. Sharing what I saw has lost me friends in the past. But now I SEE that to be me is to communicate what I know. The truth is the warning signs in both cases have come to pass.

One of the married person’s issues is not feeling able to fully express themselves in their relationship. I pointed out that repressing any part of who we are not only harms us, it also does everyone in our lives a disservice. I’m no bible thumper, but I truly believe that truth is paramount. Personal integrity is everything. We must figure out who we are and be that at all costs. Although I’ve never been married, I SEE that this is one way to make it to 8 years and beyond.

This week I hung out with a young lady who took heed to my advice. She coped a copy of the Sexual Kung Fu book. She says she could only find the American version for women. I assured her that it will do the trick and is probably easier to follow than Cultivating Female Sexual Energy. Although she’s still trying to wrap her head around the intro to Ovarian Kung Fu, she wasn’t shook by what she’s read. Most women I’ve introduced to this practice cower when they understand what’s involved. Men react the same way, but more of them are down to try it since the reward is to be a better lover. -Big up to the brave hearts who go for it! I promise sex will never be the lame… I mean the same again.

SLUMMIN’
I just saw Slumdog Millionaire. Yeah, I know I’m dumb late! I’m usually the first one at the theater for new hot releases. But I was saving the experience; I promised someone I’d wait. Because I love movies, I don’t like to save them. But my friend is cool people, and I wanted an excuse to hang out with her. Anyway, of course, the movie was dope! Reminiscent of City of God in that it articulated some realism into how people are really living. It reminded me to appreciate the abundance I’m blessed with. I also remembered why I love travel so much! There’s so much to see and do on this planet. Plus I’m a sucker for a good love story. -It’s one of the ones. If you’re the only one left who hasn’t seen it, you’re sleepin’.

LOVE
I was geeked to check out Spreadlove, DJ Kemit’s monthly dance therapy. It was the Chicago tribute, so you know it was bananas! But the kid got shut down at the door. Kemit and his wife are fam, so they always show me love on the guest list. So although I was having problems with my bank that day, I wasn’t trippin’ because I knew I was straight at the door. I didn’t trip on paying for parking, “here’s $10 Bro, have a good night”. But the gatekeepers were two women I’d never met. They informed me that the list was shut down. No worries, “can I leave you my ID and go find someone?” Instead, one of the ladies walked around the corner, apparently to “find someone for me to talk to”. When she came back by herself, I knew what was up. I worked as a doorman for years, so I’m not inclined to give people a hard time. I’ve been a promoter too, and if you wanna make money, put someone at the door that can hold it down. These women were on their job. I was frustrated because Kemit was throwing down! My ego was bruised because I didn’t have the $10-20 they were asking. So rather than making it a big deal, I bounced. By the time I left the parking lot (they kept my money too : ) I was good. I’ve had the pleasure of many free parties and good times thanks to Master Kemit and Aishah. If the party was on Saturday night when my money was right I would have spread some love in eternal thanks!

THE DJ
Speaking of Djs, I saw something interesting at http://unique74mag.com . It was Puffy talking about what a real DJ is. Real talk, I’m not his biggest fan. But every once in a blue, he says something I can get with. -I believe that “DJ” is a title that should be earned. Being relatively new to the craft, and knowing some phenomenal disc jocks, I have a strong opinion about this. There are too many so-called Djs sullying the craft with their brand of party-rockin’. Let me say this, if you can’t smoothly blend two songs together, for example, you should not be trying to rock a party! -To see what Puffy has to say, hit that link above.

WATERMELON MAN
I never got a chance to meet my grandfathers. I think it’s important for kids to know their grandparents. They are the holders of the key. These elders remind us of our familial and cultural heritage. They tell us of the troubles and triumphs that help us grow. It’s important for sons to know their grandfathers.

The summer I decided to try and meet a grandfather, something unexpected happened. On the last day of a business trip, I was invited to hang out with Melvin Van Peebles. Some friends of mine were working on a project with him. They said I should come through his apartment and chill out. See, I waited until my last day in New York to shop for kicks. But alas, there are no coincidences. I was being offered a chance to build with an elder. Little did I know it would be just what I needed!

Yesterday I was watching his bio-pic: How To Eat Your Watermelon In White Company And Enjoy It. To my non-Black family, it’s not as militant as it sounds… well… Anywho, it’s about Melvin’s unique journey. As I was watching scenes shot at his crib, I was reminded of that day. He asked me about my life. He asked me for my opinion. He told me about his life. He told me I am dope. I had a paradigm shift.

This grandfather’s life story was somehow familiar to me. He was in the military. But as a creator, he was called to find different mediums to tell stories. His journey took many unexpected turns that, in the end, lead to his great contributions to art. But one thing he left me with set me straight. He explained that most of his accomplishments came from trying new things. He simply created what he wanted to see in the world. In so doing, he accidentally broke records. Creating the movie soundtrack, and giving birth to a new movie genre were by-products of him pursuing a dream.

My grandfather past away before I got a chance to meet him. I wonder what advice he would have given me. I wonder if he would have said, “Da’shon, you can do, have, and be whatever you want”. When I was a little man I’d wished somebody said that kinda stuff to me. It’s the kind of important stuff that grandfathers share with their grandsons. Melvin bestowed blessings that day.

A young talent I know has their sights set on New York. This person is a great writer and an overall dynamo. The issue is, being close to family, is bogged down with the need to be of service to them. I think the bigger issue is the voices in this person’s head. You know the ones. The ones that say you can’t, you’re not good enough, it’s hard, etc. We gotta turn the volume down on those.

The problem is in believing the voices that float around in our heads are our own thoughts. Upon further investigation, we realize that these voices belong to family, friends, and society. They are often so loud most of us can’t hear our own voices. It’s hard to hear that one voice when there are so many others. Most of us don’t consider the distinction The Voice and the ideologies that have been implanted in our minds since conception.

The first thing to know is that we are not our minds. It’s been said that the mind is a great servant but a terrible master. So the mind and its contents should be looked at as tools to help us along our paths. Thoughts are not things to be blindly followed, they are things to be controlled by the master, you. Further, since we do have total control of our thoughts, we should use our infinite imaginations to attain what we REALLY want. I pointed out that this person was imposing limits on their situation based on the wrong voices. “I gotta take care of my siblings, Mom and Dad need me, and if I can just make $1500 I’ll be ok”. I knew these thoughts were wrong because of this person’s reactions to them. I said that if New York is where you want to be, then KNOW that it’s true. And avoid small thinking based on what people tell you is your truth. “What do YOU want? Write it down, walk in it, and every time a contrary thought arises, have a positive replacement thought. If New York is where you wanna be, then decide to break north!” When we understand our power, paradigms shift. And things tend to come faster when we take charge!

I believe that if the voice of God doesn’t sound like your voice, then you’re listening to the wrong voice. It’s my wish that everyone discover this truth for themselves.

My homie spoke on a panel at a portfolio school called the Creative Circus recently. I went along for support and curiosity about this place I’d been hearing about. –DOPE! These folks know what the hell they are doing. It seems to me that if advertising is your thing, there’s not a better school for it. They (and the students) win so many awards that some organization had to limit the amount they can receive per year! Morehouse students primarily populated the audience of this panel discussion/orientation. What I learned was there are very few minorities or women in the advertising game. One of the reasons cited was a lack of interest. The panelists, whom were mostly Black professionals, told a different story. They were there to prove that so-called minorities are very interested in being a part of a medium that dictates their public image.

-OBAMA
Did you see the Presidential Address? He really is like a rock star. For the record, I don’t generally follow politics. And I’m usually annoyed when my regularly scheduled program is interrupted for some windbag to tell us more lies. But this new president is something to behold. Obviously I feel some pride in President Obama’s position. That aside, I am amazed at his swag! I’ve never seen any political figure get the kind of reception he does when he walks into a room. Even people who voted against him were clamoring like schoolgirls to shake his hand. -I think that he’s as on point as he can be when it comes to fixing these inherited challenges. And of course there are the haters that are gonna hate for hates sake. But things just feel like they are gonna get better, especially now that the other dude is out of our faces. -Rock on Mr. President.

I was on ichat with Fahamu Pecou hearing about his art show opening in Cape town, South Africa. He says it came off properly and even had some celebs in the house! (See pix on facebook) He says Nelson Mandela showed up in a purple leather suit, although, I didn’t see those pictures… Anywho, the best part of the story is that his paintings didn’t arrive in time for the show! Can you imagine a 17-hour trip to Africa for an event that you’re featured in, and not have work to show!? Well they call him “the shit” for a reason (not just because he gave himself the title). With only 24 hours to show time, he did a study of the photos that he uses to create the work. He put the magic hands on ‘em, framed them, and hung the work just in time to show off. –Can’t, won’t, don’t stop!

My girl Jam just put me on to this website that teaches people how to become independent food growers. She is planning to turn her front yard into a produce garden. I think it’s brilliant! And real talk, it’s more necessary than most of us know. -I have a relative that was born with pubic hair! Even though I was young when I heard about this, I knew it was because of food. Can you say “hormones”? -Athletes are getting busted for steroids while the people who handle our food are doing way worse to us. Even vegetarians have to be careful of the food they buy. Aren’t the police meant to protect and serve? I’m not some typical police hater, I’m sure there are good people in some of those uniforms. But did you hear about this Good Samaritan who got a ticket after saving two lives? The weather is heavy in Colorado this time of year. So, when this bus driver was dropping off two old ladies, he decided to help them cross the street. It’s messy out there; he thought he was doing a good thing. A truck comes barreling towards them, so he pushes the ladies to safety before he got plowed! He woke up in the hospital with broken bones, head trauma, and a jaywalking ticket. Apparently they don’t play that “last boy scout” s*** in the CO!

Something serious…

Presence is my main ambition in life. Not too long ago, my goals were more normal I guess. Success, love, happiness were all a part of the vision. But when I finally realized that the only place I can experience anything real is in this moment, my life changed. Something I wrote a few years back:

“The Present is an Eternal Gift
The past is gone. The future never comes. All we really have for sure is this moment. Not the next one or the one that just past, but right here, right now!

In the journey to finding ourselves it is very helpful to look at the past. The past is where we find all of the lessons we were (supposed) to have learned. We can measure our current successes by comparing them to where we were back in the day. But in the backwards journey we often get caught up in the memories, good and bad, and most of us relive these memories in the now. When we do that we miss the magic and power of what’s in front of us, the present we are constantly being offered!

Future planning has great importance in the building of our dreams. It’s even more powerful after figuring out who we are and where we want our lives to be. The future is full of possibilities for personal greatness (or failure if you let your mind run unchecked). But if you do like I did, you can run the danger of getting caught up in constant planning and not enough action! And besides that, tomorrow never really comes does it? Think about that, it’s really always today, right now!

NOW is a beautiful gift that is awarded everyone who is here (that’s why it’s called the ‘present’). I found out that the more I honor the now, and truly appreciate every moment, the more I get out of this life. The blessings keep coming! Someone said that everything we do in this moment affects what happens to us in the next moment (I think I heard Oprah say that). Just take the present. It’s free and it’s yours!”

WHAT DO I WANT?
A friend I hadn’t seen in a while explained that she was trying to figure out what she wants out of life. It made me think about where I am in my journey.

The funny thing is I think about it a lot. I always tell people that I’ve always known what I want and who I am. I’m sure it sounds more arrogant than it is. Circumstance forced me to figure some things out at an early age. By the same token, a lot of things that I may have learned otherwise, I didn’t get. My point is, knowing who we are and what we want from our lives doesn’t stop. Life is change and the Universe is always in motion. So the realization of the truth is ever evolving. That’s should be a comfort for those of us who are truth seekers.

I have found my truth. Actually, it was more of a remembering of what’s always there. It seems to me that the ‘thing’ we want arises when we are still and in a state of allowing. Often times when we force the issue, we frustrate the issue by adding stress to it. The truth is, there are answers to our questions. But because there are constant distractions in the modern world, we miss the answers.

Try This:
The next time you have a big question, try giving it some space. Give yourself some quiet time for reflection. Hold the question in your mind, and KNOW that an answer will present itself. Then practice patience; allow the answer to come. –If you’re brand new at this, it might seem to take forever. But by the time this becomes your default setting you’ll wonder why you weren’t on it before.

The truth is, we always know what we want. The challenge is getting pass the (self-imposed) blocks.

“That just happened!”

-Those of us with old school rabbit-ear TV’s were supposed to get shut down Feb. 17. Not a good look for TV junkies! But it looks like ‘they’ pushed the date back. The government and TV stations have given us more time to use our stimulus checks to go by new products. Isn’t that great? I think the idea is that they want to make sure that EVERYONE is on the same type of screen; the easier to see you with, my pretty. If you haven’t read 1984, you’re probably still sleepin’. “Just ‘cause you’re paranoid don’t mean they’re not watching you.”

-I alluded in my last blog that I have these amazing friends “Down-Under”. They never fail to impress me. I don’t know if it’s something in the water or what. They are truly the kindest, most generous people I’ve met in my travels. I’m sure there are some asshole Aussies out there. I mean, they can’t all be cool peoples, can they? Well most of the one’s I know have been in my life for over a decade. The Love Fest is consistent. My girl E (from the last blog) brought her husband and best friend to ATL last summer, and again I was blown away! Dude is madd cool and I stay online with her homegirl! –The reason I bring them up again is because I’m organizing a trip to Australia for May 2009. I’ve be giving more details soon. -How was Valentine’s weekend? Hope it was all Love. Mine was good, although dolo. It occurred to me that I’ve never had a Valentine’s date before. It’s a good thing I don’t celebrate that (m#^*/?.<). -Speaking of facebook, have you heard about their apparent violations of privacy? The terms of service now say that “Facebook has an‘irrevocable, perpetual’ license to use your ‘name, likeness, and image’ in essentially any way” they want. Even if you delete your profile right now, you’ve “agreed” that they can use anything you’ve ever written or uploaded forever. They’ve also been secretly tracking our movements outside of the site! Of course these days everybody’s business is all out there these days anyway, but Dayum! Is it too late to go back to writing letters?

-I asked a friend what he thought I should talk about in upcoming blogs. Basically his response was sex, drugs, and rock n roll. It so happens that I had another loooonnnggg conversation about the so-called elusive female orgasm last night. The result of which can be found in the “Sage Advice” section below.

To counter what I wrote about Big and ‘Pac in the last installment, let’s think about another type of manifestation. Since the Universe does not recognize the difference between “I want this” or “I don’t want this”, it’s important that we keep our minds focused only on what we DO want.

In those pages, I also spoke on how Cash Money Millionaires manifested riches:

Look at Lil Wayne and them now! And if you consider what kids like Rich Boy, Soulja Boy, Young this, and Yung that has done, it’s easy to see the blueprint. We have to take our minds off of what we don’t want, and keep it on what we do want. Perhaps it’s easier said than done. But if we can, the impossible becomes tangible.

THE FEMALE ORGASM

So yeah, I had another (of many) frustrating conversations about the so-called elusive female orgasm. Let me clarify, it’s not frustrating for the reasons you might think. My annoyance stems from the misplaced blame as to why she’s not satisfied. To hear a woman tell it, it’s always on him…

Hear me clearly ladies, if you’re not getting’ yours IT’S ON YOU! Yeah, I said it! If you are not getting what you need from your partner’s performance, it’s your fault. And you’ve only got two mature choices; tell him to kick rocks (get out), or you should talk about your needs BEFORE you enter the bedroom.

First of all, if you were born and raised in America, and had a typical education, chances are you’ve had no real sex education. Most boys and girls are forced to learn from older kids who don’t know what the hell they’re doing either. That inevitably leads to the miss-education of a whole society. The result: arrogant men who swear they be puttin’ in work. Then you have ignorant women who swear all men are selfish bastards. The truth is 80% of men are premature ejaculators at some point. And most women, especially when they were forbidden to masturbate, can’t verbalize what feels good to them. We need a completely new playbook if we’re gonna fix this pandemic.

It breaks my heart when one of my homegirls says they’ve never had an orgasm. The worst is when they say, “I think I did, once”. No you didn’t Love, trust. In my opinion it’s a sin to go throw this life without a proper orgasm! Straight up. Regardless of our religious or cultural backgrounds, I believe it’s sinful to not have, or otherwise be denied this most important gift. I also believe that if you don’t know how to have an orgasm, then you shouldn’t be wasting you energy having sex. You need to take it to the crib and work it out until you get it right! I’m a Sexual Kung Fu practitioner (more on that in future installments). So my perspective is that of a martial artist. Before you are ever allowed to fight, you have to throw thousands of punches and kicks first. Only when your form is correct are you allowed to practice with an opponent. The same applies to sexual encounters. Ms, if you don’t know how to make yourself orgasm, how are you going to explain it to the other??? The power that comes with mastering your orgasm is beyond measure. You’ve got to figure you out right now.

And men, please stop frontin’. The only way you can tell if she’s fakin’ it is if you are PRESENT. Just because she’s screaming, “Yes” doesn’t mean you are rockin’ it right. It could be her mimicking what she saw in a movie. Men, it’s also important that we actually care. A satisfied woman is a most powerful ally. It’s my overstanding that it is a man’s duty to sexually please his woman. It’s our duty. And it’s her job to tell you if your there. For real, if you can’t identify arousal rates, the clitoris, or exactly where the g-spot is, you’ve got no business down there! Read a book son.

o I just got off the phone with one of my dearest friends. My homegirl E. just hit me from Sydney, Australia. Apparently folks are madd nervous because those wild fires are burning up the place. As a person who’s lived in southern California, I know how that goes. Santa Ana winds, arsonists, and acts of nature make that place an inferno every year. -Sending LOVE down-under to people who lost family and property. Stay up and count blessings.

o Tell that Chris Brown didn’t really beat on his girl! No dude should hit his girl, or vice versa. Well, unless he’s a little dude and she’s an Amazon whoopin’ his ass! Speaking of SoCal, when I went to high school out there, I knew this Crip. Now I’m a relatively big dude, but this girl-gangster was my size, more diesel, and had a body count! Football players wouldn’t even f*** with her! I’m just sayin’tho. –Anywho, I don’t know the real of what happened with Rhianna, and I suspect media speculation and manipulation. That said, they are both kids, and regardless of the scenario, need guidance from some elders right now. Let’s hope they get what they need, and what they deserve.

o I think that President Obama’s address on Monday was good. He was poised and confident, as usual. I especially like how his plan encompasses jobs, energy, and rebuilding in one stroke. His common sense approach makes the old guard look like bigger assholes for not supporting. It’s really wack how they left him holding the bag though! But watch, he’s gonna freak it. I have every confidence in his ability to do what’s needed. Really, this so-called recession is a joke. So, I was buildin’ on something of note with a former protégé Ian Ford the other day. He was telling me how the Biggie movie had the highest grossing opening weekend in Fox Searchlight history. That’s big for a Black Superhero. But I can’t help considering the implications of celebrating a man who was publicly a misogynistic, gun toting drug dealer who loved his moms. But that’s how Americans do.

It’s tradition to celebrate Christopher Columbus and the like for “discovering” the Americas. They brought death and destruction to this land and it’s indigenous peoples. But they get national holidays. Apparently Black Americans carry the torch of such traditions. Drug dealers, pimps, and all manner of bad-asses are what pass for a hero. Well this Black man believes ALL people should reconsider whom we chose to pedestal. Further, we should give more thought to why we celebrate some and not others.

These thoughts reminded me of something I wrote about Big (and Tupac). I was talking about how we sentient beings have far more power than most of us are aware of. I immediately recognized that the fate of both men was self-fulfilling. Biggie’s first album set the wheels in motion.

In the end he went out just like he predicted, a flurry of bullets.”

I was chillin’ with a friend recently who was feeling f***** up about a situation. This person was cheated on and had agreed to forgive. Noble, no doubt, but now they are feeling a way about it because the pain feels one-sided. So I was asked, “what is forgiveness?” For a person who’s got an answer for everything, I admit I was at a loss.

I had to fall back and consider how and why I forgive. From what I can see, contrary to popular belief, forgiveness is a completely selfish act. And this is not a bad thing. In my experience, we think that we are doing something noble by exonerating the other. And that usually leads to martyrdom. “Woe is me. I’m in pain and she doesn’t even give a crap!” And there’s truth in that sentiment. The other can’t feel the same pain you do. The resentment you feel, even if you’re screamin’ it at them, only eats at YOU. And that’s because ultimately you are the only one who can decide how you will feel about something.

The reason I let things go is because I’m selfish. I understand that when I’m mad at someone, I carry the burden. Even if the other feels an nth of my pain, I feel it fully. I let things go because I recognize that even if the other has purposely tried to hurt me, it’s because they are weak in some capacity. I know that I’m a good man and I deserve goodness. Besides, we should never allow anyone to have such power over us. -I think the only reason to consider forgiveness is to clean up your own energy. As far as the other, understand that if they could have made a better choice they would have, spiritually speaking. They have to forever live with doing you wrong. But that’s not your concern.
